1. Visit to Boston

It had been months since the abstract had been submitted. So long it had almost been forgotten about. But then the letter came. The poster it represented had been accepted for presentation at the International Microbiological and Biochemical Conference. This year it was being held in Boston. Barely into the second year of graduate work, she was quite pleased with herself.

Her mom was ecstatic, her dad was extremely happy for her. Govind wanted to know when she was going to marry Kevin. They had had a thing, as back in the day as you can get for twenty somethings. They had talked every now and then since their "thing," so it seemed appropriate to set up a coffee date for when she was in Boston.

The day for her arrival in Boston was getting closer and she still hadn't asked Kevin. If questioned about it she would probably have said she was too busy with work. In reality, she was nervous he would say no.

The day finally arrived when she could put it off no longer. She was arriving in Boston in two days. She bit the bullet and sent him a message on facebook, her only means of communicating with him.

"Hey Kevin, I'm going to be up in Boston in a few days for a conference. I was wondering if you'd like to get coffee one afternoon. I'm supposed to get in around 4:30 the day after tomorrow. I'll be there til Sunday. Let me know"

She includes her phone number at the bottom. Looks it over. Changes a few words and sends it.

"Well," she said to no one in particular. "That's that." She closes her laptop, stands up, brushes off her hands and goes into the kitchen to make some tea.

When she next opens her computer, she'll notice with some surprise that Kevin messaged her back almost immediately.
